The Idaho Building Renovation

Client:
Ken Howell

Job Description:
Renovate 80 year old, 5 story, brick mixed use building

Challenge:
The Idaho Building was not seismically compliant or structurally safe because one floor was stacked on top of the other floor with no interconnections between floors. We had to add a structural backbone called K bracing that did not exist beforehand. We needed to get all the K bracing and the interconnections up into the building and functioning. Particular challenges were installing tube steel sections of 6” square, 8” square, 15-20’ long. Getting the big steel tube sections into the building and rigged up into position and welded off and connected together was quite the job.

Solution:
We worked closely with the architects and engineers converting their initial plans into practical reality for the job. Then we worked closely with the general to achieve the required result. Pacific Steel Fabricators completed the WWI-vintage Idaho Building on time and within budget.
